Radio Digest San Diego column 4/1/99

Jacor’s San Diego Mix station (KMSX 95.7) sends its APD and PM driver, Ron “Geronimo” Price to his first full PDship at their latest Mix conversion, the former KEZY, Anaheim.  His first order of business?  … Blow my butt out as morning mouth.   Not that this will in any way affect my sworn duty as a member of the fourth estate to continue with the highest caliber of impartial and fair reporting of the activities of all the fine Jacor properties in San Diego … nooooooo, nothing like that.

KPRZ am1210 and KOGO am600 were co-sponsors of last Wednesday’s “An Affair of the Heart,” the annual fund-raiser for Heart to Heart International … a group that gets medical and personal care supplies to those in need around the world.  For a donation, patrons at the Mission Valley Center event got to chow on fare from Center restaurants, bid in a silent auction, enjoy live entertainment and take in the movie of their choice at the mall megaplex.

Singer Frankie Laine rode a blazing saddle all the way from his Point Loma home into the KPOP am1360 studios to be DJ for a day in celebration of his 86th birthday last Tuesday.  Along with the usual playlist of standards, the crooner got in some plugs for the Salvation Army’s “Save Kids Through Music” instrument donation program and the KFMB TV co-sponsored “Camp 8.”

And the (website) hits just keep comin’…

Former KOGOer Chuck Fritsch saw his item in the last column and e-mailed to correct my misinformation.  His new assignment is that of News Director for Command Audio out of Redwood City … a satellite service you’ll likely be hearing more about in the near future.  Reach him at cfritsch@commandaudio.com

Chris from the Bay area wanted to know what ever happened to Mike Novak whose San Diego credentials included the former Y-95, B-100 both as air talent and later PD and most recently at KSON in middays.  Chris remembers him before any of these when he was doing afternoons at KFRC, San Francisco.  Well, he’s back in that half of the state again, this time with the K-Love Christian music network out of Sacramento.  It’s heard locally on the little Julian station KLVJ 100.1.

Former Jacor/Astor/Shadow/KSDS employee Brooke Binkowski e-mailed wondering if the Jacor/Clear Channel merger would happen and if there would be any radio jobs left when she gets back from backpacking around the world.   Yes it has been approved by stockholders.  As far as jobs at Jacor … uhhhhh, no comment.

There are however jobs available at Star 100.7 … evenings, because Michael Steele is leaving for a posh gig at KIIS, LA. and Chancellor is looking for someone to lead Planet and KYXY … wait a minute, why am I telling you this?  I’ve got T&R’s to prepare.
